ByoWave Proteus Controller Overview
The ByoWave Proteus controller is a modular kit that allows a user to customize their own controller based on their individual needs. The kit comes with multiple parts that the user can connect together to create a unique controller shape with different orientations of the buttons/joysticks. This controller is a good option for gamers who can access the small buttons and joysticks on a standard controller but may have difficulty with the shape of a standard controller or layout of the buttons/joysticks. It is also an option for one-handed gamers, as this controller can be customized for one-handed use. See the video for an overview of the ByoWave Proteus controller and instructions on how to set it up.
Ordering
The ByoWave Proteus controller can be ordered directly from the ByoWave website. The device comes as a single kit which includes a charger, 2 power cubes, 1 half cube, 2 edge spacers, an Xbox peripheral, XYAB peripheral, Dpad peripheral, right and left trigger peripherals, mini analog stick, two larger peripheral buttons, and a wireless dongle. Currently, individual components cannot be ordered separately, and they must be ordered in a single kit with all components included. Gamers can reach out to ByoWave if an individual component is needed to add to their controller.
Getting Started and Adjusting Settings
The parts in the ByoWave Proteus controller lock together allowing the user to build a customized controller interface. The controller requires at least one power cube connected, which supplies power to the controller. Multiple ByoWave Proteus kits can be combined with each other and multiple of the same part (including joysticks) can be connected to a single controller. There are also 3D printed modifications available for the Proteus controller for further customization. There are examples of different controller setups on the ByoWave website from other users. Buttons and joysticks on the controller can be remapped using the ByoWave Community App. The controller does not need to be set up in the Community App to be used on the console, only if the user would like to remap buttons and/or joysticks. Currently, the application does not allow programming button functions and only remapping of the controller and adjustment of joystick dead zone. Each individual button has its own memory and will remember what it was mapped to in the Community App regardless of where it is moved on the controller.
Connecting to a Console
The ByoWave Proteus controller is directly compatible with the Xbox console and PC. The Proteus controller comes with a wireless dongle to connect to the Xbox or PC. Simply plug in the wireless adapter then power the Proteus controller on using the small triangular shaped button on the power cube. Though the Proteus is only directly compatible with the Xbox or PC, it can also be set up on the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch using an adapter. The Brook FGC 2 adapter will allow the Proteus to be used on the PlayStation 5. Simply plug the FGC 2 into the PlayStation 5, plug the wireless Proteus adapter into the FGC 2, power on the Proteus controller, then press the Xbox button and it should be functional on the PlayStation 5. The Brook XE 2 adapter will allow the Proteus to connect to the PlayStation 4 or Nintendo Switch. Simply plug the XE 2 adapter into the console, plug in the wireless Proteus adapter, and then power on the Proteus controller. Please note that Pro Controller Wired Communication needs to be enabled for the adapter to work on the Nintendo Switch (System Settings > Controller and Sensors > Turn on Pro Controller Wired Communication). Stay tuned for a video in the future demonstrating how to set up the ByoWave Proteus controller on different consoles.
